Catch Me if You Can, I am the Gingerbread man!

We had a great day today. We started the day with all the grade 1 students listening to the story the Gingerbread Man. After, all the students were sent on a scavenger hunt around the school with some grade 6 students to find clues to find the gingerbread man.  The Gingerbread was in the grade 1 class and we all enjoyed a gingerbread cookie together and some dancing.

In Math we learned a new math game called Making 10 Go Fish with Power of Ten Cards.

After lunch the students had music and finished up their Mitten for storytelling. All students had a chance to practice and some students told their story to the whole class.

We ended the day will poem reading with all the grade 1 students.

Who will be in your version of the story "The Mitten"?

Highlights Of Our Learning

-Yesterday we started exploring different versions of the story The Mitten. We started with the version that was written and illustrated by Jan Brett and then read a second version. We compared and contrasted the two stories and discussed how "storytellers" can add the details that they think makes the best story. Today the students drew and large mitten in their Visual Journals and in the days ahead they will select five animal characters to write about and they will then begin working on their own oral version of the story.

-Today students found many sight words in a new song that we are learning called "I Am I" and highlighted them by colouring a neat box around each word.

-We are working on printing subtraction equations. Yesterday, our focus was on printing and solving "-1" questions. Today the children rolled two six-sided dice and used the quantities rolled to print equations.

-All grade one classes went to gym today and ran sprints with a partner.
-We had a great recess playing outside in the snow.

Highlights from our learning

This week we continued to learn about animal groups. Ask your child what makes a fish a fish and what makes an insect an insect.  "They have ____." Children were given the opportunity to learn about each animal group and print 3 facts about each group in their visual journal. They also added an illustration of that animal group.

In literacy centers, students continued to practice their reading skills with a teacher in a small group, on Raz kids, poetry with a group of peers, reading to animals in the forest or reading books at their level.

During word work we have been practicing our sight words, making words and today we did a word detective around the classroom to add to our word lists in our word work book.

In math we continued to finish up our math centers. Children practiced the skills of adding 1, adding 2, adding 2 numbers on a domino, adding 2 numbers on a dice and making 10 with the power of ten cards with a partner.

We learned a few poems this week. We learned a poem about insects and birds.

We used all of our senses to explore pumpkins this week!

Ask your child all about their learning today! Hint: Baking, painting, buddies, black, orange and green pattern building, pumpkins and all the other fun we had on orange and black day!
Our Learning:
-Yesterday we drew a cross-section of a pumpkin and labeled six important parts (seeds, stem, skin, flesh, pulp and leaf). Please have your child tell you all about this. You can use the link below as a reminder.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I884JkS_aFg

- Yesterday we cut open our biggest pumpkin and took turns cleaning out the seeds and pulp. We combined our seeds with Mrs. Aebli's pumpkin seeds and placed them on a giant hundreds chart in croups of ten. We discovered that our pumpkins had a total of 1158 seeds. Miss Lana roasted the seeds for us and we got to sample sweet and salty seeds at the end of the day.

-Yesterday we added one dab of white paint to orange paint to create a new tint. Then we added another dab, and another dab, and another dab! At the end, we had five different samples of the colour orange on our page.

Today we added one dab of black paint to orange paint to create a new shade. Then we added another dab, and another dab, and another dab! At the end, we had five different samples of the colour orange on our page.

Highlights of Our Learning

-We had a school-wide lock down practice today, we demonstrated amazing expected behaviours. We sat in our lock down location for about five minutes, and the students were very responsible and did a great job.

-This week we have been practicing correct letter formation. Yesterday we practiced a group of letters known as the "downers". These letters are lowercase l, t, f, i and k and these letters are formed by making top-down strokes. Today we practiced the “magic c” lowercase  c, o, a, d, s, and e. These letters are made with using a magic c.  See if your child can recall the chant that accompanies each letter to ensure they are printing accurately. Also, have them show you some of their best printing at home.

-We have been working on skip counting by 2's to 20 and yesterday we started skip counting by 5's. We sang a number of songs to help us remember the numbers and we also looked at the patterns (visual and numeric) that exist when counting by 5's. All children cut out the numbers 0, 5, 10, 15...50 and we will be working on ordering and naming these at a later date.
We also practiced rolling dice and printing our numbers from 1 – 10.  Again, we are encouraging the students to start at the top and work their way down.

-We are working on creating colour posters. Please ask your child what colour they are working on and who their partner is.

-We have been learning a lot about the "Zones of Regulation" and trying to demonstrate behaviour in the "Green Zone" has been a target for the students (focused, ready to learn, listening, right level of energy etc.).
Please have your child tell you about all of the zones...greenyellowred and blue.

Highlights of Our Learning

WELCOME OCTOBER!

-We recognized Orang Shirt Day today and talked about the importance of how all children matter and being kind to others.

-Even though there is a LOT of snow on the ground, it is still Fall and we talked about what we smell in the fall. Students brainstormed ideas and then copied the sentence started "In the fall I smell..." and completed it with a thought of their choice. Some ideas included "In the fall I can smell apples in the orchard." "In the fall I can smell delicious pumpkin pie." "In the fall I can smell yummy hot chocolate." "In the fall I can smell the wood burning in the fireplace."

-We practiced rolling a dice and subitizing (recognizing at a glance) the quantity that was seen.
Students then played a game and covered the numeral that is one more or one less than the rolled number.

-We began to skip count forward by 2's to 20

-We had an active and fun recess outside where we were able to enjoy the snow. Thank you for having your child dressed for the weather.

-Children were assessed on their memorized knowledge of letters of the alphabet and were asked to print all of the letters of the alphabet in uppercase and lowercase

Highlights from Our Learning

We have had a busy week so far!

Fall arrived yesterday and students have been using their senses for signs of how we know it is fall. The children started a “fall book” and copied sentences such as “In the fall I see red, orange, yellow and brown leaves” and “In the fall I hear birds honking.” Children drew pictures to match their sentence of choice.

We have also been learning about the legacy of our Canadian Hero Terry Fox.

Today we exchanged Learning Commons books. Please return books by next Tuesday.

In math the children have been working on a pattern with the letters in their names and matching a colour to the letter to make a repeating pattern.

The children have been sharing their Rooster is Off to See the World story with various classmates in grade 1.

F.Y.I.

Terry Fox Run, Thursday, Sept. 26 at 1:15pm
Families are invited to join us for our school assembly and run which will be held on the afternoon of Thursday, Sept. 26 at approximately 1:15 PM. Students can bring a Toonie for Terry to school to support the fundraising efforts. Our fundraising goal this year is $800.

Volunteer Opportunities
Bridlewood School relies on volunteers to help us with fields trips, special lunches and Scholastic Book Fairs, just to name a few examples. We are currently putting together a list of people who may be able to give us the gift of some of their time for these occasions. If you are interested in supporting our school in this way, please email us at Bridlewood@cbe.ab.ca. Please remember that all volunteers must have a current security clearance and have completed a yearly volunteer form. If you need to begin this process, please visit our school office during regular office hours.
