We have had lovely recess' outside in the fresh air!! Finally!

Our Learning this week so far...

  • This week we have been writing about winter by exploring our senses in winter. So far we have been discussing and writing abut what you see, feel and hear.  We are working to make our writing more descriptive by adding juicy words. Together, we have been building on our first idea and making our writing more interesting by comparing these three sentences: "In the winter I feel snow." "In the winter I feel cold snow." "In the winter I feel cold snow that falls on my nose."
  • In math, we looked at the strategies "subtracting zero", "subtracting one" and "subtracting 2". We noted that when we subtract zero the answer does not change and when we subtract one it is like counting backwards by one or thinking about the number that comes right before. Students practiced rolling a 12 or 20 sided dice and then printing corresponding -0, -1and -2 equations.
  • We started to compile a list of words that express how we are unique. By reading the story "Cookies", we were able to list positive qualities such as responsible, respectful, helpful, proud, trustworthy, compassionate, generous, fair etc.
  • We had music and learning commons this afternoon.

  • We hope you saved the date for our "Celebration of Learning" on February 6th!
  • Please return your child's report card envelope to school. The papers that were contained inside are your copies to keep at home.
  • There is no school for students on Friday, January 31st as it is a PD Day.
Have a great evening!

Yearbook Information

BWS Yearbooks
Bridlewood School is very fortunate this year as one of our parents, who is a photographer and graphic artist/web designer,
has generously volunteered her talent and time to create our yearbook. So many thanks to Melinda Gombert for this.
Melinda has just finished designing the cover for the yearbook.

If you haven’t purchased a yearbook yet and would like to do so, you can do through accessing your fees online
(MyCBE/PowerSchool account).  You will need to go to the Goods/Services tab to locate the optional fees,
double click the yearbook line, the fee will then attach to your account, or return this invoice indicating
that you wish to purchase the year book and the fee will be added to your account from the school office.
Deadline for purchase is February 28, 2020.

Please have your child dressed warmly to travel to and from school this week.

Highlights of Our Learning:
-Today the students found out the date for our Grade One Celebration of Learning. We talked about the important information that needs to be included on an invitation and then we created a "Save the Date" page that is coming home in folders today. Please note the date and plan to join us on February 6th as your child will be sharing and celebrating some of their grade one work with you.
-Students did literacy centers today.
-Students enjoyed an inside energy break and danced and moved with the other students during our regular recess time.
-We used pattern block shapes (hexagons, triangles, squares, diamonds and trapezoids) to create beautiful snowflakes. Each snowflake had six identical branches. Please ask your child what they have learned about snowflakes so far.
-Students learned one way to illustrated snowflakes on their invitations.
-We had gym in the afternoon.

Happy New Year!!

Welcome back to grade one! It is hard to believe that we are no in our fifth month of school.

Highlights of Our Learning:

-Today the children had lots of time to "pair and share" and tell a partner about their holiday happenings. Then the students used the following sentence starters to write in their literacy books:
"On the winter break I...", "I saw..." and "I went...".

-We used two six-sided dice and learned a new math game called "Double Dicers" to help us practice creating and answering addition and subtraction equations. Please have your child tell you how this game is played.

- We went to music.

-We visited the Learning Commons to sign out new books.

-Students had a lovely time playing outside in the snow.

-We practiced reading a poem called "New Year" and highlighted a few sight words in it.

-How many words do you think you can find using the letters in the word SNOWFLAKES? We tried this today and found a lot! Some have two, three, four, five, six (and even more) letters.

F.Y.I.
-Today was the warmest day of the week, please make sure your child is dressed for the weather.  Many students did not have mitts, snow pants or a hat today.  We want to have fun outside and be dressed appropriately.
- Healthy Hunger special lunch is on Thursday January 23rd.  If you want to order, please do so before Friday, January 16th
- Oral Health for Kindergarten's/Grade 1's on January 13th-15th.
-Report cards come home on Friday.
-Scholastic Book orders were sent home today. If you would like any items, orders are due by Friday, January 17th.
